A Triple Diamond Approach for ‘Going Up the Clock face’
It is very important for a service provider to get get involved in client’s business at early formation or decision making phases. The Double Diamond help us understand how to execute what has been asked for. A new approach is needed to help figure out and strategise what needs to be built.
The Double Diamond
We are all familiar with the double diamond approach. There is an excellent blog on this in ThoughtWorks Insights.
Some notes I have seen on each phase:
Discover Phase
Curiosity and empathy for your customers are often the inspiration for Innovation. The Discovery phase does not have to be lengthy, just enough learning to define the problem you are trying to solve.
Define Phase
The Define stage is one of focus and convergence around the opportunity. Define your customer, your business model and your product hypothesis. This is where you set a vision and align your stakeholders.
Design Phase
Guided by our vision, the Design phase is divergent in nature, encouraging multiple ways of solving the problem. We rapidly prototype, test and refine the design and prepare for the delivery phase.
Deliver Phase
In Delivery, the focus shifts to robust execution as we plan the releases, build, iteratively test and refine the product. Through validation with customers we optimise the effectiveness of the product.
The Triple Diamond
Is there a diamond and phases that can describe / guide our early engagement even before a problem, opportunity or aspiration has been identified? I think there is:
The Opportunity and Strategy Phases are important to be identified.
Opportunity Phase
Your customer may come up with Greenfield or blue sky projects, may needs to scale, create new business line, transform existing organisation, etc. The Opportunity phase is where you co-discover possibilities.
Strategy Phase
The Strategy phase used Digital Transformation, Product, Data, Design thinking to come up with strategy roadmap. Here we define problems, opportunities and aspirations that need to be solutioned to achieve the strategic goal.
